Kalakkad Wildlife Sanctuary, Tuticorin Overview

Kalakad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve is located in southern most part of western ghat in Tamil Nadu. 
It spreads across 567 sq. kilometers. The place is a bio diversity ecospot with over 7 rivers originate here. However, no wildlife safari is conducted here.

The Kalakkad Wildlife sanctuary is one of the few national parks in South India that house the Tiger. Lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, bonnet macaque, langur, Nilgiri tahr, sambar, sloth bear, gaur, elephant, flying squirrel, panther, wild dog and pangolin are some of the other animals found here.

It's 115 km from Tuticorin, Kalakkad Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the top wildlife destinations in Tamil Nadu.

 The evergreen forest sanctuary was recognized as a Tiger Reserve in the year of 1988 and came to also known as Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve.

The nearest railway station is Ambasamudram located at a distance of about 6 km. Buses are frequently available from here. 
The months of October to January are ideally suited for a visit to the Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary.

Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR) located in the South Western Ghats montane rain forests in Tirunelveli district and Kanyakumari district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is the second-largest protected area in Tamil Nadu.

KMTR has at least 150 endemic plants, 33 fish, 37 amphibians, 81 reptiles, 273 birds and 77 mammal species. As per the 2018 census, the tiger population is 16 to 18. Other animals in the tiger reserve include leopards, elephants, Nilgiri tahr, Nilgiri langur, wild boar, chithal, sambar deer, leopard cat, jungle cat and 67 other mammal species.
